About Skydiving in Nelson

Skydiving Near Nelson: Jumping at the Top of the South

Bathed in more sunshine than almost anywhere else in the country, Nelson sits at the top of the South Island between golden beaches, national parks and a thriving arts and craft scene. With Abel Tasman, Kahurangi and the Marlborough Sounds all within reach, it's one of New Zealand's great outdoor bases.

Skydiving in and around the Nelson region

Nelson doesn't have a dropzone immediately beside the city, so making a jump usually involves planning it into your wider South Island travels. The good news is the region is a natural launch pad for adventure, and the drives — past beaches, vineyards and mountains — are spectacular in their own right. If a skydive is high on your list, build it around your route through the South Island.

What to expect

Tandem skydiving requires no experience — you jump securely harnessed to a qualified instructor who handles the exit, freefall and landing. After check-in and a short briefing you'll climb to altitude, enjoy under a minute of freefall, then float down under canopy. Licensed jumpers travelling through should contact their chosen dropzone in advance about sport-jump availability and requirements.

Best time to visit

Nelson's famously sunny, settled climate makes the warmer months especially appealing, and summer through autumn (December–May) generally offers the most reliable jumping conditions and long daylight hours. Skydiving is weather-dependent wherever you are, so keep your itinerary flexible and, if you're driving to a dropzone, leave a spare day in reserve.

Exploring Nelson

The region rewards a longer stay: the beaches and coastal walks of Abel Tasman, the wineries toward Marlborough, and Nelson's galleries and markets all make excellent additions to an adventure trip. Combining time here with a jump elsewhere in the South Island is a great way to experience the top of the south.
