About Skydiving in Wellington

Skydiving Near Wellington: Freefall Beyond the Capital

New Zealand's compact, creative capital sits dramatically between a working harbour and steep green hills, packed with cafés, galleries and a famously lively waterfront. Wellington's weather has a windy reputation, but just over the ranges lies the calmer, sunnier Wairarapa — where the region's skydiving happens.

Why the Wellington region for skydiving

The capital's setting is spectacular from any angle, but the smart move for jumpers is to head over the hill to the Wairarapa, where sheltered plains and settled conditions make for reliable flying. From altitude you get the broad rural sweep of the valley, ringed by ranges, with the coastline beyond — a fine contrast to the busy harbour city you started from. It's an easy day trip that pairs naturally with the Wairarapa's wineries and villages.

Tandem skydiving needs no experience — you're harnessed to a qualified instructor who manages the exit, freefall and landing.

Where can you skydive near Wellington?

The nearest dropzone is across the ranges in the Wairarapa:

  • Skydive Wellington — around 80 km from the city near Masterton, a small, relaxed dropzone balancing tandem, student and sport jumps.

Getting there

Reaching the Wairarapa means crossing the Remutaka ranges by car or catching the train to Masterton — a scenic trip in itself. A rental car gives the most flexibility, especially if you want to fold in a winery lunch. Confirm the meeting point and check-in time with the dropzone when you book, and allow travel time over the hill.

Best time to jump

Wellington is known for wind, so calm, settled days are the goal — and the Wairarapa side tends to be more sheltered. Summer and autumn (December–May) generally offer the warmest, most reliable conditions and long daylight. Jumps are weather-dependent, so book early in your visit and keep a spare day in reserve.

What to expect

After check-in and a briefing you'll gear up, climb to altitude and freefall for under a minute before the canopy opens for a scenic descent over the valley. First-timers jump tandem with an instructor; licensed jumpers should check sport-jump availability with the dropzone ahead of time.

Prices, altitudes and booking conditions vary and change over time — confirm current details and availability directly with your chosen dropzone before booking.
