About Skydiving in Serbia

Skydiving in Serbia: Where the Danube Meets the Clouds

Serbia is a hidden gem for skydiving in Eastern Europe, offering a unique blend of adrenaline, rich history, and stunning aerial landscapes. While it may not be the first destination that comes to mind for European skydiving, its growing community, competitive pricing, and diverse scenery—from the endless Vojvodina plains to the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers—make it a thrilling choice for both first-time jumpers and experienced sport enthusiasts.

With 13 dropzones scattered across the country, Serbia provides ample opportunity to take to the skies. Whether you are looking to conquer your first tandem jump over the historic capital of Belgrade or you are a licensed skydiver chasing the perfect thermal, Serbia’s skies are open for business.

Why Skydive in Serbia?

1. Unique Aerial Views Skydiving in Serbia offers a visual feast that contrasts sharply with other European locations. Jumps near Belgrade provide a spectacular view of the urban sprawl meeting nature, where you can see the distinct confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Further north, the dropzones offer views of the vast, colorful patchwork of the Vojvodina plains, while the south offers more rugged, mountainous terrain.

2. Great Value for Money Compared to Western European destinations like France, Switzerland, or the UK, skydiving in Serbia is significantly more affordable. A standard tandem jump can cost anywhere from 20% to 30% less than the European average, without compromising on safety or equipment standards. This makes it an excellent place to get your license (AFF course) or build up jump numbers if you are a sport jumper.

3. The "Košava" Challenge For experienced skydivers, Serbia offers a unique meteorological phenomenon known as the Košava wind. This strong, squally southeasterly wind typically blows during the autumn and winter months. While it can ground operations when it’s at its peak, catching a jump window during the Košava season offers a crisp, clear atmosphere and a unique challenge for canopy piloting enthusiasts familiar with dynamic weather patterns.

Climate and Best Time to Jump

Serbia experiences a continental climate with four distinct seasons. The skydiving season typically runs from March to November.

  • Spring (March - May): The season kicks off with fresh, crisp air. Temperatures average around 13°C to 23°C. The scenery is lush and green, making for beautiful contrast in photos.
  • Summer (June - August): The peak season. Temperatures can soar up to 31°C, so early morning jumps are popular to beat the midday heat. Note that June is often the wettest month, so flexibility with booking is recommended.
  • Autumn (September - November): Many jumpers consider early autumn the "sweet spot." The extreme heat subsides, the foliage turns golden, and the air is often stable. However, be aware that late autumn can bring the start of the Košava wind season.

Rules and Regulations

Serbia follows strict safety protocols overseen by the Civil Aviation Directorate of the Republic of Serbia (CAD). If you are visiting from abroad, here is what you need to know:

Licensing and Documentation

  • Tandem Passengers: No special license is required. You will need to sign a waiver and present a valid ID.
  • Sport Jumpers: Serbia generally recognizes international licenses such as those issued by the USPA (United States Parachute Association) or FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale).
  • Logbook: Always bring your physical logbook and license. Dropzones will want to verify your currency and proficiency before allowing you to jump solo.

Equipment Standards

  • AADs are Mandatory: All skydiving rigs (both student and experienced) must be equipped with a functional Automatic Activation Device (AAD).
  • Oxygen Requirements: In line with general aviation safety, supplemental oxygen is typically required for jumps performed above 4,500 meters (approx. 15,000 ft). Most commercial jumps in Serbia take place between 3,000m and 4,000m, so this is rarely an issue for standard operations.

Medical and Age Requirements

  • Age: The minimum age for tandem skydiving is usually 16 years old with written parental consent, or 18 years old for independent waivers.
  • Weight Limits: strict weight limits are enforced for safety. The standard maximum weight for tandem passengers is 100 kg (220 lbs). Some dropzones may make exceptions up to 110 kg depending on the harness fit and wind conditions, but this often incurs a surcharge.
  • Medical: A medical certificate is not required for tandem jumps. However, if you are enrolling in a solo skydiving course (AFF or Static Line), you will likely need a Class 3 medical certificate or a specific fitness statement signed by a doctor.

What to Expect on Your Jump

Most dropzones in Serbia utilize aircraft like the Cessna 182 or Piper series for smaller loads, with some larger operations bringing in turbine aircraft for events or busy weekends.

  1. Arrival: Plan to arrive at least 30-60 minutes before your scheduled slot.
  2. Training: Tandem students receive a 15-20 minute briefing on exit body position and landing legs-up procedures.
  3. The Ascent: The flight to altitude takes about 15-20 minutes, offering plenty of time to soak in the views of the Serbian countryside.
  4. The Jump: You will typically exit from 3,000 to 3,500 meters (10,000 - 11,500 ft), giving you roughly 40-50 seconds of freefall.
  5. The Landing: Most dropzones have large, grassy landing areas that are forgiving for students.

Getting There

Serbia is well-connected to the rest of Europe. The primary hub is Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG). Many of the country's main dropzones are located within a 30 to 60-minute drive from the capital, making it easy to combine a skydiving adventure with a city break in Belgrade.
